Matt
Was The World For His Sister.
When
Matt suspected his mom was advancing toward his sister, he told
a friend’s parent of his experiences of being abused sexually.
Motivated with nothing more than to protect his little sister from experiencing
the same pain that he quietly endured for more than two years, Matt found
the courage to speak out.
A
Friend’s
Mom Became The World For Matt.
Matt
talked with a friend’s mom. Fortunately,
she believed Matt. South Dakota Department of Social Services removed
Matt and his sister from this abusive situation immediately. Because
of Matt, his sister was not harmed or sexually abused. She was welcomed
in a safe and comforting foster home where she received supportive
services. Because of Matt’s experiences of abuse, he was placed
at Summit Oaks in Sioux Falls where he would be safe, find opportunities
to heal, learn to cope with his experiences and have the best chance
of success for his future.
Summit Oaks is one of four residential treatment centers of Lutheran
Social Services that cares for children who have been abused, neglected,
and abandoned. LSS serves
children who have emotional, behavioral and addiction problems as well as children
who have experienced violence and trauma. Matt’s story is one of many
stories of children suffering.
