Each year, Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota recognizes a distinguished congregational partner in honor of outstanding service and support to LSS.
Lutheran Social Services is honoring three independent congregations as Distinguished Congregational Partners. All three congregations made a significant impact on their communities and helped LSS Disaster Response to quickly mobilize and provide services effectively and efficiently. Those congregations are Canton United Methodist and Bethany Reformed both of Canton and Our Savior’s Lutheran of Wessington Springs.
During the summer of 2014, multiple communities were devastated by natural disasters. On June 16, excessive rain caused flooding in both Union and Lincoln counties, with the city of Canton hit especially hard. On June 18, a tornado ripped through Wessington Springs, damaging or destroying dozens of homes and displacing nearly 80 people. In both instances, LSS Disaster Response was on the ground to provide support and leadership in recovery efforts.
This work is successful because of the partners with local churches. Bethany Reformed also opened their doors to house volunteers and allowed their kitchen and multi-purpose room to act as a cafeteria to the many volunteers active in the recovery efforts.
“The ministry of LSS would not be possible without the many partnerships and support from congregations, businesses and thousands of individuals,” says Betty Oldenkamp, President/CEO. “We are blessed and honored to recognize Bill Hough, Xcel Energy, Canton United Methodist, Bethany Reformed and Our Savior’s Lutheran as Distinguished Partners.”
Each year, employees, volunteers, organizations, community and corporate partners and many others support LSS in a variety of ways—building a strong foundation and tradition of serving those in need. The results of their actions cannot possibly be calculated numerically. Yet their efforts are vital in helping individuals, families and communities find inner strength during difficult and challenging times. LSS is grateful for all who have given in one way or another.
