Local Business Owner Makes Exterior Building Improvements Possible for New Alternatives

Because of the generous in-kind support of local business owner Gene Wittkowske of Collins Siding, Rapid City, LSS can complete the needed exterior building improvements on the New Alternatives building located at 120 Philadelphia Street in Rapid City.

New Alternatives helps young adults ages 18 to 21 learn to manage their severe mental illness by providing housing, case management, counseling, nursing care and medication management. In a safe place to live with 24-hour staffing, clients are able to learn life skills to lead successful adult lives. Young adults referred to New Alternatives have resided in psychiatric residential treatment for adolescents or other types of psychiatric settings and have limited support systems. New Alternatives is part of LSS Independent Living Services which served nearly 600 young adults last year.

“A project of this magnitude can be daunting,” said Sheila Johnson, New Alternatives program director. “We are so grateful for this generous gift. The young adults who live here have been through so much. The new siding will give our clients a sense of pride in their home.”

Wittkowske is donating the material and labor for the entire siding project. “Knowing the difficulties that non-profits have to fund these projects makes it easy to want to help,” said Wittkowske.

“We certainly appreciate donations and gifts of any kind,” said Jessica Lillebo, director, LSS Development & Foundation. “We tend to focus more on immediate needs such as toiletries, household items or food. The donation of the entire siding project was such a wonderful surprise.”

Kieffer Sanitation and Summit Signs & Supply, Inc., both of Rapid City, also gave in-kind donations in support of the project.

In addition to New Alternatives, core services offered by LSS include adoption, pregnancy counseling, foster care, kinship services, childcare & education, disaster response, mental health counseling, Fatherhood & Re-entry Services, Center for Financial Resources, residential services for children & youth, detention alternatives, independent living services for young adults, mentoring, Better Together and Center for New Americans. LSS serves people of all ages, races, faiths and economic levels with professional, confidential and affordable services.
