Mentor Program Expands To Dell Rapids
Posted on 12/29/2011
Dell Rapids School District will soon begin offering a school-based mentor program. The school district has partnered with Lutheran Social Services Mentoring Programs to create positive experiences and relationships for students and volunteers.
Lutheran Social Services role is to recruit, screen and train adults interested in serving as a mentor. Volunteers give one hour each week during the school year to work with students. Mentors and students enjoy a variety of activities together, such as reading a book, playing board games or simply eating lunch and talking.
The Mentor Program is offered in all Lincoln and Minnehaha County public school districts. Mentoring is linked to many positive outcomes for youth involved, including improved academic performance and decreased discipline referrals. Volunteers also enjoy participating. Mentors must be at least 18 years of age. All volunteers will undergo a background screen and training prior to meeting with a student.
The program in Dell Rapids is funded through a grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Justice to Lutheran Social Services. Individuals interested in becoming a mentor may contact LSS at 221-2403 or visit www.lsssd.org to complete an application.
