Each year, Lutheran Social Services recognizes a distinguished community or corporate partner in honor of outstanding service and support to LSS.
2011 DISTINGUISHED COMMUNITY PARTNER
Sioux Empire United Way
The long standing and stable relationship with the Sioux Empire United Way is not one that can be taken for granted and is deserving of special recognition as the LSS 2011 Distinguished Community Partner of the Year. The Sioux Empire United Way has been involved with Lutheran Social Services for more than 80 years. While services have changed throughout their involvement, the goal has remained the same – meeting the growing and changing needs in the Sioux Falls area.
The Sioux Empire United Way is a stable source of funding for three services: mentoring, consumer credit counseling and mental health counseling. They have touched the lives of so many by providing services that may have not otherwise been possible without their support.
The Mentoring Program would not exist in the way it does without the United Way. This year, LSS was selected to carry out the 2012 Sioux Empire United Way initiative— USucceed. This new mentoring program for high school students will provide the most at-risk students with the opportunity to have a mentor to help them grow, learn and succeed.
Each year, employees, volunteers, community and corporate partners and many others have supported LSS in a variety of ways—building a strong foundation and tradition of serving those in need. The results of their actions cannot possibly be calculated numerically. Yet their efforts are vital in helping individuals, families and communities find inner strength during difficult and challenging times. LSS is grateful for all who have given in one way or another.
Last year, more than 56,000 lives were touched through a variety of services offered through LSS statewide. Core services offered by LSS include adoption, pregnancy counseling, foster care, childcare, disaster response, consumer credit counseling, residential services for children and youth, mentoring, refugee and immigration services, affordable housing, and mental health counseling. LSS serves people of all ages, races, faiths and economic levels with professional, confidential and affordable services. LSS is licensed by the State of South Dakota and accredited by the Council on Accreditation.
