LSS Childcare & Education Services Growing In Response To Community Need

Lutheran Social Services Childcare & Education Programs at Southern Hills are growing right along with their students. The program is currently serving more than 175 students in their infant/ toddler enrichment, preschool and after-school programs.

Opening May 2012 a newly finished and expanded state of the art facility will allow for eighty additional children. LSS will offer enrichment programs for children ages four weeks to three years giving them a jump start on all academic and social skills they will need for preschool. The preschool program will offer full- or half-day learning experiences for three to five year old children. The expansion will also allow for more school age students and after school care will be offered for students from John Harris, Harvey Dunn and Rosa Park Elementary Schools.

Lutheran Social Services offers a unique type of care and learning that optimizes the ability of young children to learn and develop. Care is personalized and based on each child’s temperament, interests and learning styles. Learning opportunities for children are based on brain development research. Some program components include:

-- Intensive staff interaction and parent involvement make the connections that help little ones learn and grow.
-- For infants, toddlers and preschool students, an online product called Teaching Strategies Gold helps degreed teachers be intentional in their teaching by accurately pinpointing where children are in their development and learning. This system also allows parents immediate access to reports that show their child’s development and activities.
-- For infants and toddler students, Baby Sign Language assists children in early communication and helps to enhance verbal and social development.
-- Elementary students enjoy learning after-school and in the summer as they choose from a wide variety of engaging and educational activities.

All students engage in service learning activities to instill values of community, caring and compassion. Parents interested in Lutheran Social Services Childcare & Education Services can call 605-371-8770 or visit
