Fatherhood & Families: Inside & Out

There are many challenges for fathers who are incarcerated to maintain or improve their relationships with their spouses or partners and their children. These challenges exist while they are incarcerated and directly following their release as they begin their new life outside of the prison system.

In partnership with the South Dakota Department of Corrections, Lutheran Social Services initiated the Fathers & Families Program to address the challenges faced by incarcerated men and to encourage responsible fatherhood and promote healthy relationships, ultimately strengthening the family.

Studies have shown that inmates who are released from prison and have relationship problems with their spouses or partners are more likely to revert to criminal activity.

As more than 630,000 offenders nationwide are released from prison every year, recidivism affects all parts of a community. One indication of a successful reintegration is having a healthy relationship.
