Classes
English
As A Second Language (ESL)
Classes
are free to refugees and immigrants. Four levels of instruction are available
based on English
language ability. Levels of instruction are from beginning to advanced.
Each level of instruction consists of an oral language skills component
and
a literacy
skills component.
- Oral
ESL classes focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation and grammar.
Emphasis is on using oral English language skills for everyday
American life and culture.
- ESL
Literacy classes focus on reading, writing, spelling and grammar.
Emphasis is on the study of written English language, American culture
and life skills.

Special Topic Classes are short-term classes offered monthly on a rotating
schedule. Some of the topics include:

Preparation
Computer Instruction
Classes are provided to refugees and immigrants who are enrolled in Refugee
and Immigration Programs. Basic computer instruction starts at the
very beginning. No previous computer experience is expected. Students
learn basic computer operations including using the mouse, opening
and closing programs and basic word processing skills. In addition,
students can use specific English learning software to practice and
improve their English skills.
Orientation for Adults and Young Adults
Orientation is provided to refugees enrolled in Refugee and Immigration
Programs. These classes give information about U.S. culture, local
practices and procedures. Classes are scheduled frequently to provide
the basic information as soon as possible upon arrival in the United
