Resettlement
Phase 1: Pre-Arrival As another option, the family may be assigned to the One Church/One Family program where a church or a group of churches serve as a sponsor to assist the family in the resettlement process. Phase 2: 30-Day Resettlement Health screenings and immunizations are given and referrals are made to health services. Refugees apply for food stamps and medical assistance with the Department of Social Services. Interim cash assistance is calculated and made available to newly arriving refugees for up to eight months. Phase 3: Self-sufficiency They have the same responsibilities for paying taxes as all workers. To enhance communication skills, refugees are encouraged to continue English language classes beyond employment. Refugees can receive service for up to five years from the date of arrival. Such services include information and referral, continuing case management, and employment services, as requested by the refugee. In addition, many refugees volunteer their time to assist other newcomers and welcome them to the community. Refugee & Immigration
