Refugee Resettlement

Phase 1: Pre-Arrival
Once LSS receives a pre-arrival notice, preparations are made for the new arrivals. Staff members, volunteers and family members work together to arrange for adequate shelter and furnishings.

As another option, the family may be assigned to the One Church/One Family program where a church or a group of churches serve as a sponsor to assist the family in the resettlement process.

Phase 2: 30-Day Resettlement
Refugees are registered for LSS community orientation and pre-employment classes. English tests are given and adults are placed in appropriate English language training classes. Children are enrolled in school.

Health screenings and immunizations are given and referrals are made to health services. Refugees apply for food stamps and medical assistance with the Department of Social Services. Interim cash assistance is calculated and made available to newly arriving refugees for up to eight months.

Phase 3: Self-sufficiency
Refugees are eager to begin work and get a fresh start in a new community. Upon arrival in the United States, refugees are legally granted the right to work. LSS staff and volunteers assist refugees in finding suitable jobs. Most become employed within four months.

They have the same responsibilities for paying taxes as all workers. To enhance communication skills, refugees are encouraged to continue English language classes beyond employment.

Refugees can receive service for up to five years from the date of arrival. Such services include information and referral, continuing case management, and employment services, as requested by the refugee. In addition, many refugees volunteer their time to assist other newcomers and welcome them to the community.
