Neighbors are the people all around us. They can be next door, down the street or in the same city. Neighbors share common experiences with each other, no matter what age or culture. In the LSS Better Together program, we see the participants in the program as our “Neighbors.” The participants in this program are not just recipients of volunteers’ time, but play an active part in a social relationship that can allow them to feel like they belong and are valued.
To participate in the LSS Better Together program as a Neighbor, you must be living independently, over the age of 65, and must desire to take part in social activities. If you would like to become a Neighbor in the LSS Better Together program, listed below are the steps you can take. If you have any questions along the way, please contact LSS.
Step 1: Application
Complete an application. Submit the completed application to. Please be sure to complete all blanks on the application before submitting!
Step 2: Contact
Upon receiving the application, neighbors will be contacted by LSS to schedule an initial meeting with LSS Staff.
Step 3: Home Visit
Neighbors will receive a home visit from LSS staff at a mutually agreed upon time. The purpose of this visit is to clarify any questions about the program and complete a simple assessment.
Step 4: Matching & Meeting
LSS will match the volunteer with a neighbor. The volunteer will work with the neighbor to schedule a time to meet and decide what they will do at each meeting. Volunteers and neighbors may be involved in a variety of activities, such as playing cards, going for a walk, watching a movie, eating a meal together, going shopping, knitting or just drinking coffee and talking. It is expected that matches meet at least four hours per month.
