LSS Mentoring Services
Michelle Madsen, Director
Lutheran Social Services Everyday Heroes Mentoring Program will expand to Flandreau for the 2019-2020 school year. The program started in Sioux Falls in 2001 in collaboration with the Sioux Empire United Way. In early 2009, LSS expanded services to all school districts in Lincoln and Minnehaha counties. Throughout the past ten years, additional districts have inquired about the program and bringing it to their community. Flandreau has championed the cause and has officially partnered with LSS to make the program happen. The program will be supported by a grant from the Allied Arts Fund Change Network.
The program will match volunteers with students at Flandreau Middle School (grades 5-8). Trained volunteers will be matched with one student who they will meet with for about an hour a week at school during the school day. Students will be referred to the program by the school counselor. Matches will spend their meetings eating lunch, talking, playing games, and other relationship-building activities. There is a strong emphasis on volunteers forming a developmental relationship with their student and honing in on the child’s strengths by working on setting and meeting goals together.
If you are interested in volunteering for the program in Flandreau, apply here. If you know of a middle school student who would benefit from this service, please call us at 444-7801 or contact the school counselor at the start of the upcoming school year.
